Astrovirus

Rapid CDIATM Alpha Astrovirus kits are intended for the detection of astrovirus in stool.

Astrovirus virus is a non-enveloped single positive-stranded RNA virus, which are characterised by their distinct star like appearance. Astroviruses are recognised as a common cause of viral gastroenteritis in young children worldwide. The incubation period typically lasts 3-4 days; symptoms are watery diarrhae, fever, anorexia and abdominal pain. Symptoms usually last 2-3 days but may persist for up to 12 days in immunocompetent individuals and significantly longer in immunocompromised patients. The transmission via the faecal-oral route is the most usual. Astroviruses have been associated with outbreaks of gastroenteritis in hospitals, families, communities and institutes.
