Beta adrenergic agonists

Rapid CDIATM  β-agonists kits are intended for qualitative detection of Beta adrenergic agonists in urine.

Beta-adrenoceptor agonists (β-agonists, including β1 agonists and β2 agonists) bind to β-receptors on cardiac and smooth muscle tissues. The effect of β-agonists is cardiac stimulation (increased heart rate, contractility, conduction velocity, relaxation) and systemic vasodilation. β-agonists usually have mild to moderate adverse effects, which include anxiety, hypertension, increased heart rate and insomnia. Other side effects include headaches and essential tremor. A major side effect of β-agonists is cardiac arrhythmia. Because these drugs increase myocardial oxygen demand, they can precipitate angina in patients with coronary artery disease. No beta-agonists have been permitted in the European Community for growth-promoting purposes in farm animals. The use of highly active beta-agonists as growth promoters is not appropriate because of the potential hazard for human and animal health.
