Campylobacter
Campylobacters are helical, or curved, Gram-negative, oxidase positive rod-shaped bacteria. They have been isolated from the environment as well as from humans and animals. Infection has been associated with the consumption of contaminated water and foods, particularly poultry and unpasteurized milk. Most people who become ill with campylobacteriosis get diarrhoea, cramping, abdominal pain, and fever within two to five days after exposure to the organism. Some infected persons do not have any symptoms. In persons with compromised immune systems, Campylobacter occasionally spreads to the bloodstream and causes a serious life-threatening infection.
