CEF (Ceftiofur)

The occurrence and detection of antibiotic residues in milk continue to be concerns for the dairy industry. Ceftiofur is a cephalosporin antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including ß-lactamase-producing bacterial strains. It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis in a similar fashion to other cephalosporins. Ceftiofur is used in the treatment of respiratory infections in cattle and pigs. Ceftiofur may be prescribed by veterinarians to use in a way more than enough. Antibiotic residues above the FDA-established "safe" or tolerance levels could be present. Such a test can be taken to assure the milk supply is safe.
