Gentamycin

Rapid CDIATM gentamicin kits are intended for the qualitative detection of gentamicin in milk.

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that displays broad spectrum, high potency, anti-bacterial action for most susceptible organisms. Gentamicin’s antibacterial activity is due to its ability to bind to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome where it inhibits protein synthesis. All the aminoglycosides are potentially toxic compounds causing significant damage in vestibular and auditory functions in human and animals. Nevertheless, they are used in practice because of their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Gentamicin can harm human kidneys, and may also cause nerve damage or hearing loss. The European Commission established a gentamicin Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) of 50 ppb for muscle and fat, 200 ppb for liver, 750 ppb for kidney and 100 ppb for milk.
