T. cruzi
Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a potentially life-threatening illness caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). T. cruzi is carried in the guts of hematophagous triatomine bugs; transmission occurs when infected bug feces contaminate the bite site or intact mucous membranes. A minority of persons with long-standing T cruziinfection develop the serious cardiac and gastrointestinal problems that characterize chronic symptomatic Chagas disease. Some trypanosome species are also important in veterinary medicine, since they have been seriously affecting animals of economic interest such as horses and cattle.
