TB
Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). M. tuberculosis has an unusual, waxy coating on its cell surface, which makes the cells impervious to Gram staining. The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but TB bacteria can attack any part of the body such as the kidney, spine, and brain. If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal. In a person who has a healthy immune system, the body usually fights the infection by walling off the bacteria into tiny capsules called tubercles.
