TP
Treponema Pallidum(TP) is the causative agent of the venereal disease syphilis. TP is a spirochete bacterium with an outer envelope and a cytoplasmic membrane. This worm-like, spiral-shaped organism infects people by burrowing into the moist mucous membranes of the mouth or genitals. From there, the spirochete produces a non-painful ulcer known as a chancre. Multiple clinical stages and long periods of latent, asymptomatic infection are characteristic of syphilis. If untreated, it progresses through 4 stages: primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary.
