Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt transgenic)

Rapid CDIATM Bt transgene test kits are intended to use as a rapid method for detection of Bt transgene.

Bacillus thuringiensis (or Bt) is a Gram-positive, soil-dwelling bacterium, commonly used as a biological pesticide. B. thuringiensis strains produce two types of toxin. The main types are the Cry (crystal) toxins, encoded by different cry genes, and this is how different types of Bt are classified. The second types are the Cyt (cytolytic) toxins, which can augment the Cry toxins, enhancing the effectiveness of insect control. In 2005, over 26 million hectares of Bt-enduced transgenic corn and cotton were planted. Many pests were exterminated because the Cry protein family has many flexible toxin variants. Due to the protein’s toxic nature, there are concerns that this gene will have a negative impact on the consumer’s health.
