Cryptosporidium
Cryptosporidium infection (cryptosporidiosis) is an illness caused by tiny cryptosporidium parasites. Both the parasite and the disease are commonly known as "Crypto." While this parasite can be spread in several different ways, water is the most common way to spread the parasite. Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of waterborne disease among humans in the United States. In most healthy people, a cryptosporidium infection produces a bout of watery diarrhea and the infection usually goes away within a week or two. If you have a compromised immune system, a cryptosporidium infection can become life-threatening without proper treatment.
