Enterovirus
Enteroviruses are small, very contagious viruses made of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and protein. Enteroviruses are commonly encountered infections, especially in infants and children. They are responsible for a myriad of clinical syndromes, including hand-foot-and-mouth (HFM) disease, herpangina, myocarditis, aseptic meningitis, and pleurodynia. Enteroviruses consist of Poliovirus, Coxsakievirus, Echovirus, and numbered Enterovirus. All enteroviruses are transmitted by the fecaloral route. There are also epitopes common to the enterovirus group in VP1, and antibodies against these determinants are heterotypic and nonneutralizing.
