GBS (Group B Streptococcus)

Rapid CDIATM GBS kits are intended for the detection of group B streptococcus infection by detecting group B Lance field antigen.

Group B strep (GBS) is a type of gram-positive streptococcal bacteria. Group B Streptococcus (group B strep), also known as Streptococcus agalactiae, is a type of bacteria that causes illness in people of all ages. Group B strep is usually harmless in adults. In newborns, however, it can cause a serious illness known as group B strep disease. Group B strep disease in newborns most commonly causes sepsis, pneumonia, and sometimes meningitis. A mother can pass GBS to her baby during delivery. The group B strep test is done during pregnancy to identify women who carry this common bacterium.
