Melatonin

Rapid CDIATM Melatonin test kits are intended for the detection of PAPP-A in blood.

Melatonin is a small molecule with a molecular weight of 232 Daltons. It is a derivative of an essential amino acid, tryptophan. After its isolation from the bovine pineal gland, it was initially classified as a neurohormone. Subsequently, it was found that many peripheral tissues and organs in animals synthesize melatonin. Some of these include retina, Harderian gland, gut, ovary, testis, bone marrow, lymphocytes, and skin. Also, the gut and skin likely produce more melatonin than does the pineal gland. Thus, the concept of melatonin as a neurohormone has been challenged.
