Sulfadiazine is an antibiotic. It shows a broad spectrum and strong antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and negative bacteria, can be used for meningococcal, pneumococcus, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, also utilized in streptococcal infection treatment. It can pass through the blood-brain barrier into the cerebrospinal fluid, thus it has been used to treat epidemic meningitis.

For the mechanisms, it works as a competitive inhibitor of dihydrofolate synthase and achieve the effect of inhibition of folic acid synthesis. However, some people have allergic reactions to these drugs, so hypersensitivity reaction need to be checked before using.

The detection of Sulfadiazine is usually performed in a immunoassay method like ELISA or lateral flow immunoassay.
