Typhoid fever

Typhoid fever is usually caused by the infection of Salmonella typhi. The symptoms can vary form mild to severe. The latency period is always between 6 and 30 days.

The pathogen, Salmonella typhi, is also known as Salmonella enterica serotype typhi. They can grow in the intestine and blood, and doctors can use Salmonella Typhi Rapid test to diagnose and confirm. People usually get infected by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with the feces of an infected person. Thus it is crucial to maintain a good public health system to  block the spread.

The classical gold standard for diagnosis is the Widal test, which will always take a relatively long time for a good in-time treatment. Now, thanks to the immunoassay methods, especially the rapid ones, it is possible for the doctors to get a preliminary diagnosis in less that 30 min to start a proper treatment while waiting the formal results of the Widal test.

For the treatment, typhoid vaccine can give a period partial protection. Several antibiotics, such as azithromycin, fluoroquinolones or third generation cephalosporins have been proved for the treatment. However, resistane have been reported. The prevention of the infection is still the most important and better way for fighting against the disease.
