Amantadine (AM)
Amantadine (AM), a stable, colourless, crystalline amine with an unusual symmetrical structure, is clinically used as an anti-Parkinson agent and antiviral drug . In animal breeding, AM is mainly used in the treatment and prevention of bird flu and transmissible gastroenteritis of swine. However, AM may have harmful effects in animals. In fact, the US FDA has prohibited the use of AM in livestock, and the Chinese Department of Agriculture (bulletin no. 560) has also banned the antiviral AM drug for livestock and poultry breeding.
